Good Health & Well-Being

Good Health & Well-Being is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations in 2015.
It aims to ensure healthy lives and promotes well-being for all at all ages.

What is Good Health & Well-Being?

The Good Health and Well-being SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) is one of the 17 SDGs established by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The goal of SDG 3 is to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all, at all ages. This includes reducing maternal and child mortality, ending the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and other communicable diseases, and promoting mental health and well-being.

The targets for the Good Health & Well-Being SDG include reducing the global maternal mortality ratio, ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, reducing deaths and illnesses from non-communicable diseases, achieving universal health coverage, and increasing the number of health workers in developing countries.

This SDG is an important part of the United Nations' efforts to promote sustainable development and improve the lives of people around the world.

Good Health & Well-Being Initiatives

Universal Health Coverage (UHC)

This is a global movement that aims to ensure that all people have access to quality health services without facing financial hardship. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines UHC as “a system that provides all individuals and communities with access to quality health services without suffering financial hardship, including access to essential medicines, vaccines, diagnostics, and other health commodities”.

The Zero Discrimination Movement

This initiative aims to end discrimination based on health status, gender, age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or disability. Discrimination in health care can prevent people from accessing essential services, such as HIV testing and treatment, maternal and child health care, and mental health care.

The Global Technical Strategy for Malaria

This initiative aims to reduce the global burden of malaria by 90% by 2030. Malaria is a serious public health program, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where it is a leading cause of illness and death. Strategies to reduce malaria are implemented through national malaria control and elimination programs, with technical support from the WHO and other partners.

Why Good Health & Well-Being is Important

Improved Health Outcomes

Good health is essential for individuals to lead productive and fulfilling lives. By improving access to quality health care services, reducing the burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases, and promoting healthy lifestyles. This goal can help to improve health outcomes for individuals and communities around the world.

Improving Women’s Health Outcomes

Women and girls face unique health challenges, including maternal mortality, gender-based violence, and limited access to health care. This goal includes specific targets to improve maternal and child health, promote sexual and reproductive health, and address gender-based violence, which can help to advance gender equality.

Poverty

Poor health is a major cause and consequence of poverty. This goal aims to address the underlying causes of poor health, such as inadequate nutrition, unsafe living conditions, and lack of access to health care, which can help to reduce poverty and promote economic development.
